Hypersomnia is a condition characterized by excessive sleepiness that persists despite adequate or even prolonged nighttime sleep. People with hypersomnia may sleep 10 or more hours per night and still feel unrefreshed, struggle to stay awake during the day, and experience significant difficulty functioning at work, school, or in daily life. At Sleep Health & Wellness, Dr. Maria Tovar-Torres offers thorough evaluation and evidence-based treatment for patients experiencing hypersomnia in Bingham Farms and throughout Metro Detroit.

Idiopathic Hypersomnia
A primary sleep disorder with no identifiable underlying cause. Patients typically sleep for long periods and experience severe sleep inertia, commonly referred to as sleep drunkenness, upon waking.
Secondary Hypersomnia
Excessive sleepiness caused by another condition, such as sleep apnea, depression, hypothyroidism, or the use of certain medications.
Recurrent Hypersomnia
Rare episodes of extreme sleepiness that last days to weeks, separated by periods of normal functioning. Kleine-Levin Syndrome is the most recognized form.
Diagnosing hypersomnia requires a careful clinical evaluation to rule out other causes of excessive sleepiness, including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and mood disorders. Dr. Tovar-Torres will conduct a comprehensive review of your sleep history, symptoms, and medical background. Sleep studies including polysomnography and the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) may be used to support diagnosis.
Treatment for hypersomnia depends on the underlying cause and the severity of your symptoms. Dr. Tovar-Torres will create a personalized plan that may include:
If you regularly sleep more than nine hours and still feel exhausted, or if daytime sleepiness is affecting your safety, work performance, or relationships, a sleep evaluation is warranted. Hypersomnia is often under-recognized and undertreated. Accurate diagnosis is the first step toward effective management.
Dr. Maria Tovar-Torres is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Sleep Medicine, giving her specialized training in diagnosing and treating complex sleep disorders including Hypersomnia.
We don’t just treat symptoms — we look for underlying causes and related conditions to develop a complete treatment plan.
If a sleep study is needed, you can complete it in the comfort of your own bed rather than spending a night in a sleep lab.
Hypersomnia management often requires adjustments over time. We provide follow-up care to ensure your treatment continues working effectively.
